Higher Education Academy calls for greater recognition for university teaching

Paul Ramsden, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Academy, today called for greater recognition for teaching in universities throughout the UK.

The call came as the Academy published its new strategic plan. This is focused on transforming the student experience through five aims: evidence-informed practice, brokering knowledge, strategic change, influencing policy, and raising the status of teaching.

Professor Paul Ramsden said:

"We have included a specific objective on the status of teaching for the first time. The quality of teaching is what students remember of their time in higher education.

There is plenty of evidence that our universities and colleges already take this very seriously. The Professional Standards Framework and accredited programmes for teaching training support work in this area. Many HEIs link teaching excellence to promotions and appointments.

But there is a lot more to be done. Many academics say that research carries too much weight compared with teaching when it comes to promotions and recognition. A major task for the Academy is to find out what lies behind these perceptions and make it easier for teaching to gain the recognition it deserves. We will work with the sector to develop robust criteria for assessing teaching that parallel those used to measure research".

The Academy’s strategic plan covers a five year period from 1 August 2008. It was written by academics from the Academy’s Subject Centres, based on extensive consultation with the sector.

Professor Ramsden added:

"Consultation on the plan showed overwhelming support for our task of supporting higher education in providing the best possible learning experience for all students. The Academy, in common with any institution and every academic, does its job because students and the quality of their experiences matter. Improving those experiences is a prize worth striving for".

The results of the second phase of the Academic Misconduct Benchmarking Research Project (AMBeR) show that while HEIs vary in their application of plagiarism policies, there are clusters of consensus within groups of universities.

National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) project funding awarded

Ten teams from higher education institutions are to receive project funding of up to £200,000 from the Academy's National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS).

These were the second awards in the scheme's new project strand, part of an overall programme to raise the status of learning and teaching in the higher education sector, and will lead to investment in the sector of around £2 million.

The scheme, funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), presents opportunities for higher education institutions to work with National Teaching Fellows to develop projects that support the student learning experience in their own institutions and across the sector.

The projects receiving funding this year range from a study into teaching practices at the University of Kent to research on employability and disability at the University of Worcester.

The first major UK study of students’ first-year experiences in higher education has found that over 80% of students found their studies stimulating and over 70% thought the teaching they received was supportive – but nearly 60% were worried about financing their studies and 58% said they had to undertake paid work in order to support themselves while in higher education.
