Description
Of Course I’m Professional – But What Does That Mean?
Exploring the core knowledge and professional values dimensions of the UKPSF
Outline
The UKPSF provides a framework that enables the professional development of all staff engaged in supporting learning, whatever their experience and role. It also provides a means by which institutions can demonstrate to students and other stakeholders the professionalism that staff bring to the support of the student learning experience. Underpinning this professionalism is a set of professional values articulated in the UKPSF.
Accredited programmes are all able to show alignment with the UKPSF, most usually through a mapping of activities and assessment against the six areas of activity described in the framework. The other two dimensions of the framework – core knowledge and professional values – are often more problematic. How, for example, are they addressed in institutional provision, whatever its nature? How are these dimensions explored? What evidence of commitment and understanding is sought and how are judgements made against this evidence? Is it possible to assess some of the attributes?
This day workshop will consider how and where issues are best addressed in both accredited programmes and continuing professional development schemes, and provide opportunities to discuss and design appropriate teaching and support strategies. It is aimed at initial lecturer induction programme leaders, those responsible for continuing professional development schemes, and others who support institutional and individual development within HE.
